Kyiv, Ukraine – Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy announced on Saturday that a significant military operation had been carried out targeting deep inside Russian territory. He confirmed that Ukrainian drones had launched precise attacks overnight. He explained that these attacks targeted strategic sites in the Krasnodar region in the south, as well as a military base near St. Petersburg in the north of the country.
In a strongly worded address broadcast on the X platform, Zelensky asserted that these attacks were part of what he termed “Ukrainian sanctions against aggression.” He emphasized that these operations had proven effective in penetrating Russian defenses.
He explained that the drones traveled up to 1,000 kilometers to reach Russian naval storage facilities. They also struck a base in Kronstadt, near St. Petersburg. Furthermore, they hit an oil depot in the Krasnodar region, 500 kilometers inside Russia.
“A just response to injustice”
The Ukrainian president described these results as the fruit of intensive joint efforts by the Ukrainian Armed Forces, the Security Service of Ukraine, and the Defense Intelligence Agency. He praised the precision of the soldiers in carrying out these operations. Zelenskyy sent a direct message to the Russian leadership, stating that the time had come to end the war. He also accused Moscow of insisting on continuing the fighting despite the consequences. He affirmed that “any injustice perpetrated against Ukraine will be met with a just response.”
Escalation in confrontation strategy
Escalation in confrontation strategy
These developments point to a new Ukrainian strategy aimed at projecting the “sound of war” into the Russian heartland. It also seeks to pressure Moscow by depleting its logistical and oil resources.
While the Russian Ministry of Defense has yet to comment in detail on the extent of the damage to the targeted sites, the international community is watching closely to see how these attacks will affect the already tense military situation. This is especially true given Zelensky’s insistence on linking the continuation of these operations to Russia’s refusal to halt its military actions against Ukraine.
