Brussels, Belgium – The European Union has officially approved the United Kingdom’s participation in its €90 billion Ukraine support loan program, designed to cover Kyiv’s urgent defense and economic requirements for 2026 and 2027, marking a major milestone in cross-channel security alignment.
Defense Capability Financing and Economic Support
The approval allows Ukraine to utilize loan funds to procure military equipment directly from UK defense manufacturers, alongside enterprises in EU member states, the European Economic Area, and accredited partner nations.
The funding structure allocates €60 billion to bolster Ukrainian military capabilities and defense industry production, while €30 billion is earmarked for direct budgetary and economic support to maintain state operations amid financial pressures.
Strengthening UK-EU Cooperation and Disbursement Roadmap
Irish Minister for Foreign Affairs and Trade Helen McEntee, representing Ireland’s rotating EU Council Presidency, stated that the decision highlights a shared commitment between Brussels and London to sustain long-term support for Kyiv. The decision follows the formal signing of the contribution agreement on July 13, with final approval by the Council of the European Union expected shortly.
To date, the EU has disbursed €8.1 billion under the facility—comprising €4.9 billion for defense spending and €3.2 billion for budget support—with an additional €28.3 billion projected for disbursement throughout 2026.
The UK’s inclusion in the EU’s €90 billion financing framework signifies deepening defense-industrial integration between London and Brussels, expanding Kyiv’s access to military supplies while stabilizing its sovereign finances.
