Tel Aviv, Israel – The Israeli newspaper Yediot Ahronot quoted a senior Israeli security source as saying that the agreement currently being discussed with Iran, “if signed in its current form, will be a disaster for Israel.”
These remarks were made in reference to the ongoing negotiations between Washington and Tehran.
Concerns within the security establishment
According to the newspaper, the source expressed the Israeli security establishment’s concern regarding
some of the clauses proposed in the potential understandings.
It also stated that these clauses could grant Iran greater leeway to maintain its nuclear capabilities and bolster its regional influence.
Yedioth Ahronoth noted that assessments within Israeli security circles indicate
that the current agreement does not fully meet all demands related to restricting the Iranian nuclear program.
The source added that Israel is closely monitoring the details of the negotiations,
amid concerns that any weak agreement could alter the balance of power in the region.
International movements, contacts, and anticipation
These statements coincide with intensive political and security contacts Israel is conducting with the US administration
and several international parties to express its reservations about the potential agreement.
The Israeli political arena is also witnessing increasing debate about how to deal with any understanding
that might be reached between Washington and Tehran in the coming period.
The United States and Iran are continuing their indirect negotiations
amid mixed signals regarding the chances of reaching a comprehensive agreement.
Meanwhile, countries in the region are awaiting the outcome of the talks and their implications for regional security.
Observers believe that the recent Israeli statements reflect the extent of concern
within Tel Aviv regarding any settlement that it considers insufficient to curb Iran’s nuclear ambitions.
