Washington, DC – A group of Arctic allies announced new agreements to strengthen security, military, and economic cooperation in the Arctic and the far north. This comes amid what they described as growing geopolitical challenges related to Russian actions and China’s increasing interest in the region.
In a joint statement issued by the Arctic Allies, the US State Department said the region is gaining increasing strategic importance globally, particularly with escalating Russian military activity and China’s growing interest in northern resources and sea lanes.
Strengthening the military presence
The statement affirmed that participating nations are working to enhance their military presence, surveillance and reconnaissance capabilities, and joint exercises in the Arctic, within a framework of coordinated and deliberate cooperation among allies.
It noted the allies’ support for an increased NATO presence in the region through various missions and activities, including Operation Arctic Sentry. These also include air policing missions in Iceland and forward ground forces in Finland, as well as the development of the Combined Forces Command in Norfolk, the establishment of a new air operations center in Norway, and the modernization of the NORAD air defense system.
Concern over Russia and China
The statement explained that the allies discussed emerging security challenges in the Arctic, given Russia’s growing military activity and China’s expanding interest in the region, including natural resources and new sea routes resulting from climate change and melting ice.
The statement also emphasized the importance of maintaining stability and security in the region, while working to counter any threats that could affect the strategic interests of Western nations.
Economic and investment cooperation
The participating countries affirmed their commitment to strengthening coordination on economic development, natural resources, and critical infrastructure in the Arctic. This includes research security, vetting foreign investments, and the development and protection of critical facilities.
The statement indicated that Europe and Canada are assuming a greater role in deterrence and defense efforts within the region. This comes in conjunction with continued close coordination with the United States and NATO.
The allied nations concluded their statement by emphasizing their continued joint efforts to ensure the Arctic remains a safe, stable, and prosperous region, amidst the rapidly evolving geopolitical landscape.
