Washington, DC – US President Donald Trump escalated his rhetoric against Cuba, asserting that the United States “will not tolerate a rogue state” located just 90 miles from US shores. His remarks refer to the Caribbean island, whose relations with Washington are increasingly strained.
US escalation against Havana
Trump, in remarks carried by US media, said the US administration will not rest “until the Cuban people regain their freedom.” He also stressed the continuation of political and economic pressure on the Cuban government in the coming period.
Trump’s remarks come amid escalating tensions between Washington and Havana over a complex web of political and security issues. In addition, there are US accusations regarding Cuba’s domestic policies and foreign relations.
The US president affirmed that his country is closely monitoring developments in Cuba. He also stated that the stability and security of the region are a priority for the United States.
Increased tension and political and economic pressures
US-Cuban relations have recently witnessed a political and media escalation, particularly following reports of security and military movements within Cuba, alongside the continuation of US sanctions against Havana.
Trump’s statements also coincide with repeated US warnings regarding what Washington describes as “hostile activities” near its borders.
The US administration continues to impose sanctions and economic measures on Cuba. This comes as part of a pressure campaign that Washington says aims to support “democratic transition” on the island.
In contrast, Cuban authorities reject the US accusations. They also maintain that the sanctions imposed on the country are the primary cause of the deteriorating economic and living conditions in Cuba.
