Port of Spain, Trinidad – Security authorities in the Republic of Trinidad and Tobago have allowed a Ukrainian cargo plane bound for Libya to depart. This follows the completion of an extensive and urgent investigation into the presence of a shipment of explosive materials that were neither listed nor authorized in the official flight documents. This was considered a clear violation and a serious breach of international civil aviation security rules and globally established security protocols.
Details of the sudden arrest in the Caribbean region
The Trinidad and Tobago Airports Authority stated in an official statement carried by media outlets and the international website Firstpost that the Ukrainian CVK-708 aircraft was originally en route from the Bahamas. It arrived at Trinidad International Airport on May 14, 2026, as part of its scheduled flight plan for a temporary technical stop and refueling. This was in preparation for continuing its long flight to its final destination in Libya.
Discovery of the Unauthorized Shipment and Investigation
The government statement added that immigration officers and air traffic control authorities discovered, during a routine and thorough inspection of the aircraft and its cargo, quantities of sensitive explosive materials that had been shipped without being listed on the official manifest or cargo documents. This prompted immediate security action, with the military aircraft and its Ukrainian crew being temporarily detained and a security perimeter established around the site pending further investigation.
The authorities immediately formed a high-level investigative committee comprising multiple security and oversight bodies, both local and international. Participating agencies included customs forces, national police, and the Special Criminal Investigations Unit, along with intelligence coordination with international security agencies specializing in monitoring arms and hazardous materials supply chains. This was done to determine the fate of the shipment and the true beneficiary in Libya.
Release and continuation of the journey towards Libya
The airport authority statement explained that thorough technical investigations and comprehensive legal questioning conducted over the past few hours have cleared the flight crew. It was determined that neither the pilot nor his co-pilot bears any direct criminal or political responsibility for the documentary error related to the cargo company.
Based on these findings, the relevant authorities in Trinidad and Tobago issued final official permission for the Ukrainian aircraft and its crew to leave the airspace and continue their journey towards North Africa. This occurred amidst heightened monitoring of air traffic routes.
