Baghdad, Iraq – Iraqi Prime Minister Ali al-Zaidi affirmed that the new Iraqi government will work to consolidate security and stability, protect Iraq’s sovereignty, and strengthen Arab, regional,
and international relations based on mutual respect and shared interests. This will preserve the country’s standing and role in the region.
In a speech delivered after officially assuming his duties from former Prime Minister Mohammed Shia al-Sudani, al-Zaidi stated
that the next phase will be one of “genuine national partnership” that transcends political differences.
He further explained that it will contribute to strengthening the unity of the state and its institutions.
Comprehensive economic reform program
The Iraqi Prime Minister added that his government will launch a comprehensive economic
and financial reform program aimed at building a strong, diversified, and sustainable national economy.
This will move away from dependence on a single resource, referring to the effort to reduce reliance on oil as the primary source of revenue.
Al-Zaidi emphasized that the new government will work to support economic development and improve the state’s financial performance.
He further explained that this will contribute to creating job opportunities and achieving economic stability.
He pledged to fight corruption
The Iraqi Prime Minister stressed that his government will continue working to protect public funds
and combat administrative and financial corruption in all its forms.
He also affirmed that the next phase will witness the strengthening of the concept of a state of institutions, the rule of law, and justice.
He indicated that the government will be open to all national forces
and will work in a spirit of cooperation to confront internal and external challenges.
The Iraqi parliament granted its confidence to Ali al-Zaidi’s government by an absolute majority after it was sworn in last Thursday.
However, some ministerial portfolios remain vacant pending the completion of the new government formation.
