Tripoli – The Libyan capital, Tripoli, experienced severe security tensions yesterday evening following violent protests by groups of Al-Ittihad Club fans. What began as a protest against the results of a local league match escalated into widespread rioting and chaos in the vicinity of a strategic government building in the city center.

Fan Outrage and Field Clashes

The unrest ignited immediately after the final whistle of the controversial match, as fans expressed their fury over officiating decisions and the final score. Local sources reported that protesters:

  • Gathered in Vital Areas: Surrounding facilities near the capital’s center.
  • Set Fires: Limited fires were reported around a government building, threatening public infrastructure.
  • Clashed with Security: Forces intervened to disperse the crowds and established a strict security perimeter to prevent the violence from spreading to other districts.

Investigations and Calls for Restraint

Libyan authorities have launched an immediate investigation to determine the circumstances of the incident and identify those responsible for the vandalism. Meanwhile, prominent sports and social figures have issued urgent pleas for fans to exercise restraint, warning against dragging sports into the arena of violence and chaos. This comes amidst a charged atmosphere in recent Libyan League fixtures, highlighting the need for firmer organizational and security measures to protect citizens and public property in 2026.
