Kuwait – The Kuwaiti Ministry of Interior announced on Tuesday serious developments in the case of the four infiltrators arrested earlier this month. Investigations revealed that the group was officially affiliated with the Iranian Revolutionary Guard and had been tasked with carrying out hostile acts within Kuwaiti territory.
Identities of those arrested and their roles
The Kuwaiti Ministry of Interior stated in a press release that those arrested are: Colonel Amir Hossein Abdolmohammad Zaraei, Colonel Abdolsamad Yedaleh Ghanavati, Captain Ahmad Jamshid Gholamreza Zolfaghari, and First Lieutenant Mohammad Hossein Sohrab Foroughi Rad.
During interrogations, the accused confessed to being tasked by the Iranian Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) with infiltrating Bubiyan Island on Friday, May 1st. This was accomplished using a fishing boat that had been rented specifically for carrying out sabotage operations. They also admitted to planning hostile acts targeting the security and stability of the State of Kuwait.
Armed clash and soldier injured
The statement revealed details of the clash that occurred during the infiltration attempt, in which members of the group opened fire on Kuwaiti armed forces stationed on Bubiyan Island. This resulted in the injury of one member of the armed forces while performing his national duty.
The Kuwaiti Ministry of Interior also indicated that two other individuals fled during the clash: Naval Captain Mansour Qambari and Abdulali Kazem Siamri (the vessel’s commander). The search for them continues.
Security alert and readiness
The Kuwaiti Ministry of Interior confirmed that all necessary legal measures have been taken against the accused, in accordance with established procedures. It also emphasized the high state of readiness of all its sectors, in cooperation with the armed forces and relevant security agencies.
The statement added that Kuwait’s vigilant security forces will not hesitate to confront any plots targeting the country’s sovereignty.
The official spokesperson for the Ministry of Defense, Colonel Saud Abdulaziz Al-Atwan, announced on May 3rd the thwarting of a maritime infiltration attempt through territorial waters. This operation is now considered a major national security issue following the explicit confessions of the Iranian elements regarding their hostile intentions. These events also place regional relations at a new juncture of tension amidst continued direct interference in the affairs of the Gulf Arab states.
