Washington, DC – The US Secretary of Defense asserted that Iran has a “historic opportunity” to reach a comprehensive agreement that would de-escalate rising tensions in the region.
He emphasized that “the ball is now in Tehran’s court” to make the right decision at what he described as a critical juncture.
The diplomatic track is the first option
The US official explained in a press statement that his country still prefers the diplomatic track as its first option,
despite the military escalation and ongoing tensions.
He believes that reaching an agreement could open the door to
a new phase of regional stability.
He added that an agreement could prevent the region
from sliding further into confrontation.
He noted that the US administration has laid out a clear framework for any potential agreement,
including commitments related to Iran’s nuclear program.
He also referred to what he termed Iran’s “regional behavior,” alluding to its role in several Middle Eastern issues.
He further emphasized that Washington is prepared to offer economic
and political incentives should serious understandings be reached.
Regionally tense atmosphere
In contrast, the defense minister stressed that other options remain on the table should the negotiation process fail.
He clarified that his country “will not hesitate to protect its interests and its allies.”
This reflects a continued policy of exerting pressure while simultaneously remaining open to dialogue.
These statements come amid a tense regional atmosphere, with escalating military movements
and an exchange of indirect messages between the two sides.
This makes any initiative for de-escalation closely watched by the international community,
which is waiting to see whether Tehran will seize this opportunity or continue down the path of escalation.
