Hasakah, Syria – The Hasakah countryside in northeastern Syria witnessed a new security escalation early Thursday morning. A bus belonging to the Syrian Ministry of Defense was attacked by unknown assailants on the road between the towns of Tal Tamr and Ras al-Ayn.
Targeting details
Field sources reported that a military bus was ambushed while passing through the area. This resulted in varying degrees of injuries among the personnel on board. Neither the Syrian Ministry of Defense nor any other official body has issued a detailed statement clarifying the final casualty count or the precise circumstances of the attack. Meanwhile, investigations are ongoing to apprehend the attackers, who fled after carrying out the assault.
escalating series of attacks
This attack comes at a time when northern and eastern Syria are witnessing a marked increase in operations targeting Syrian army checkpoints and internal security forces.
Just three days earlier, the city of Raqqa experienced a similar, bloody attack. Armed men affiliated with ISIS stormed a public security headquarters, using machine guns and grenades. One of the attackers then detonated himself inside the compound, resulting in deaths and injuries among security personnel. The Syrian Interior Ministry had previously announced the death of one member of the internal security forces and the injury of three others in a suicide operation carried out by ISIS militants in Raqqa as well.
Increased security concerns
Field reports indicate that the Raqqa and Deir ez-Zor governorates, as well as the Hasakah countryside, have become the scene of frequent attacks, most of which are claimed by ISIS. The group exploits the complex geography of the region and the surrounding security conditions.
These successive operations present Syrian forces with significant challenges in securing supply lines and protecting military convoys from ambushes. At the same time, there are warnings of a resurgence of ISIS sleeper cells attempting to reassert their presence through hit-and-run tactics that drain the security forces.
