Moscow, Russia – Rosatom Director General Alexey Likhachev affirmed that the Bushehr nuclear power plant in Iran is a top priority for the corporation. He emphasized the continued implementation of projects related to the plant despite the challenges facing the region and the rapidly evolving geopolitical landscape.
Likhachev explained that Rosatom is continuing its technical and engineering work on the plant, considering it one of the most important projects for peaceful nuclear cooperation between Russia and Iran. He also noted that the corporation is committed to fulfilling its contractual obligations. Furthermore, the corporation is continuing work on the new units currently under construction as part of the project.
The Russian official noted that cooperation between Moscow and Tehran in the nuclear field spans many years and has contributed to the development of Iran’s energy infrastructure. He also emphasized that the Bushehr nuclear power plant is not merely an electricity generation project, but a model of technological and industrial cooperation between the two countries.
The Bushehr plant is Iran’s first nuclear power plant. It plays a crucial role in supporting the national electricity grid and reducing reliance on traditional energy sources. Furthermore, Russia is working on additional development phases at the plant as part of Iran’s plans to increase its nuclear energy production for peaceful purposes.
Likhachev’s remarks come amid ongoing international scrutiny of Iran’s nuclear program. In the same vein, Moscow has repeatedly affirmed its support for civilian nuclear projects implemented under the supervision of the International Atomic Energy Agency and in accordance with international standards for nuclear safety and security.
