Iran’s parliament approved a bill criminalizing interviews and direct communications with media outlets designated as hostile by state authorities. Consequently, individuals engaging with media affiliated with or funded by the US or Israel face up to two years in prison.
Restrictions on Foreign Entities and Embassies
The legislation mandates prior approval from the Intelligence Ministry before conducting interviews with any other foreign media outlets. Additionally, contacting foreign embassies or international organizations without written permission from the Foreign Ministry incurs severe penalties and fines.
On the other hand, sharing unauthorized information or presenting policy proposals under foreign direction is strictly prohibited. Consequently, penalties for security or economic offenses executed under foreign guidance can reach up to 30 years in prison.
Revolutionary Courts Jurisdiction and Legal Framework
Iran’s Revolutionary Courts have been designated to adjudicate cases originating under this new legal framework. Furthermore, the bill restricts scientific cooperation exclusively to academic institutions pre-approved by government authorities.
Finally, the draft law currently awaits final review and ratification by the Guardian Council before taking effect. Ultimately, the legislation marks a significant expansion of state oversight regarding external communication and information flows.
