Belgian firefighters are battling a massive wildfire in the High Fens nature reserve, which has consumed nearly 3,000 hectares of forest. Consequently, local authorities declared high emergency alerts to contain what is described as the largest forest fire in modern Belgian history. Furthermore, officials expressed growing concern regarding flames approaching nearby residential zones.

Fire Expansion and Village Evacuations

The fire erupted last Friday before spreading rapidly from 80 hectares to thousands across a few hours. Additionally, authorities ordered partial evacuations in the villages of Sourbrodt and Bütgenbach to protect residents from active blazes and heavy smoke.

On the other hand, ground crews face severe operational challenges due to rugged terrain hindering emergency vehicles. Consequently, remaining residents in neighboring areas were instructed to stay indoors and keep doors and windows closed until hotspots are suppressed.

European Assistance and Climate Conditions

The complex field conditions prompted Belgium to request emergency assistance through the European Union Civil Protection Mechanism. Additionally, helicopters and aircraft from the Netherlands, Sweden, and the Czech Republic joined aerial firefighting operations alongside local teams.

Finally, this unprecedented disaster coincides with a severe heatwave and drought impacting large areas across Europe. Ultimately, persistent high temperatures and dry vegetation remain critical factors accelerating the spread of major forest fires.
