United States – New York – American military estimates have revealed the limited nature of Iranian options in the region. The New York Times reported on the weakness of Iran capability to close Hormuz Strait entirely. Although Tehran possesses various military tools, it lacks long-term endurance. Iran currently relies on limited skirmish tactics only. Experts confirm that the waterway will remain open to international trade. Washington is closely monitoring Iranian naval movements to ensure navigation stability.

Limited Tactics and Temporary Obstruction Methods

Tehran relies on fast boats and naval mines to spread anxiety. However, these methods do not strengthen Iran capability to close Hormuz Strait for long periods. These tactics cause only temporary disruptions in ship movements. Reports explained that Iranian coastal missiles represent a potential threat. Yet, they are not enough to impose a comprehensive and continuous closure of the vital strait. This passage represents the lifeblood of the global economy and oil. Therefore, Iranian control over it remains merely an attempt at political pressure.

US Deterrence and Protecting Global Energy Corridors

The United States and its allies maintain a strong naval presence in the region. This presence weakens any Iran capability to close Hormuz Strait militarily. Any Iranian escalation will face a swift and decisive military response. Major powers consider securing the strait a top strategic priority. About one-fifth of the world’s oil supply passes through this strait daily. Therefore, Tehran realizes that a full closure would lead to a broad confrontation. This is a confrontation whose economic or military consequences Iran may not be able to bear.

Political Pressure and Fears of Total Confrontation

Iran often resorts to limited escalation as a means to blackmail opponents. Tehran wants to demonstrate Iran capability to close Hormuz Strait in international forums. However, the field reality proves exactly the opposite according to US officials. The threat to close the strait remains just a card for negotiation and improving terms. Experts warn against being drawn behind the military propaganda promoted by Tehran. The strait will remain open thanks to the balance of military power in the Gulf.
