Tehran, Iran – In a rapidly escalating military development that is bringing tensions back to the forefront in the Persian Gulf region, the public relations department of Iran’s Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) announced on Tuesday that it had carried out a successful operation against US aircraft.
According to an official statement issued by the IRGC, air defense units, following “precise intelligence monitoring,” detected, intercepted, and shot down a US MQ-9 drone in the Persian Gulf region.
Details of the air confrontation
According to the statement, the operation did not end with the downing of the drone, but extended to a broader aerial confrontation. The Revolutionary Guard confirmed that its air defenses fired on another RQ-4 drone and an advanced F-35 fighter jet, forcing them to immediately flee what the statement described as “Iranian territorial waters.”
This incident reveals the heightened state of alert maintained by Tehran in dealing with American aerial movements in its regional vicinity.
Iranian warning: “The response is legitimate and final.”
The statement did not merely announce the operation, but also included a strongly worded warning message to the American side. The Iranian Revolutionary Guard warned against any “violation” of the current ceasefire agreement, stressing that its forces place the “right to respond” among their strategic priorities, describing it as a “legitimate and final” response in the event that Iranian territory or airspace is subjected to any attack.
These developments on the ground have plunged the region into uncertainty, especially given the conflicting accounts surrounding the nature and objectives of these movements.
While international actors remain silent so far, the situation in the Arabian Gulf remains volatile and could escalate further. This is occurring amidst the absence of any official comment from the US Central Command (CENTCOM) regarding the Iranian Revolutionary Guard’s claims. Therefore, questions remain about the impact of this incident on maritime security and the fragile calm prevailing in the region.
