Algiers – The Algerian judiciary will open one of the most serious espionage cases related to economic security on Monday, in a case concerning the leaking of sensitive information to foreign entities suspected of seeking to harm the national economy. The case involves a branch of a French company operating in Algeria under the name “Orle Amaront International Algeria.” Company officials are expected to appear before the Algiers Criminal Court. They will face serious charges, including collecting and delivering information to foreign entities that could harm the country’s economic interests.

According to investigations launched by the Economic and Financial Crimes Unit on March 17, 2024, the company operated under the guise of private security and guard services, specifically protecting factories and transporting funds. However, the investigation revealed that it was in fact a front for collecting detailed data and reports on the security and economic situation in Algeria. This information was then regularly transferred to its parent company in France, Amaront International SAS. Algerian media outlets reported that the case file contains a number of serious violations, most notably the leaking of maps and security assessments classifying areas within Algeria as “high risk” to “safe,” and sending them to foreign companies. This could negatively impact investment decisions in the country.

The investigations also revealed the use of unlicensed communication devices at Houari Boumediene International Airport in Algiers and Oran Airport, which was considered a direct threat to the security of vital facilities.

The case also included the execution of illegal tasks, such as guarding French aircraft, inspecting baggage, and monitoring the activities of foreign companies, including Alstom in Mostaganem, the Spanish company Indra, and Neptune Bank. The same data indicates the company’s involvement in violating the administrative closure order issued against it, in addition to illegally altering its commercial registration. This reinforces suspicions about the true nature of its activities. The trial sessions are being awaited with great interest, given the sensitivity of the case and its potential repercussions on Algeria’s economic and sovereign security. At the same time, the authorities affirm their determination to firmly address any activities that undermine the country’s stability and strategic interests.
