Highlights
  • No dialogue with Washington at the moment
  • Broader talks

Havana, Cuba – Cuban President Miguel Diaz denied the existence of any political talks with the United States government. He stressed that communication between the two sides is limited to “technical contacts” in the field of immigration.

This was in response to statements by US President Donald Trump in which he spoke of ongoing discussions with Havana.

The Cuban president said in a post published on the “X” platform that “there are no discussions with the United States government,

This excludes technical communications in the field of migration.

No dialogue with Washington at the moment

He stressed that his country has not entered into a comprehensive political or diplomatic dialogue with Washington at the present stage.

This statement comes one day after Trump announced that talks were taking place between the two sides.

This is without providing further details about its nature or level.

The immigration issue is seen as one of the few channels that still see limited communication between Cuba and the United States.

This comes amid ongoing political disputes and US sanctions against Havana.

These contacts often focus on technical aspects, such as regulating irregular migration.

The procedures for returning migrants, and the security coordination related to transit traffic in the Caribbean region.

Broader talks

The Cuban president’s denial of broader talks reflects Havana’s eagerness to clarify its official position.

And not to give the impression of a political rapprochement at a time when bilateral relations are still strained.

The statement also comes in a sensitive context regarding US policy towards Cuba.

There are differing opinions within Washington regarding how to deal with the Cuban government.

Cuba has repeatedly stressed that any improvement in relations with the United States must be based on “mutual respect” and the lifting of sanctions.

Meanwhile, Washington continues to link any opening to political changes within the island.

The immigration file remains the only exception that allows for a minimum level of communication between the two sides. It is far removed from any declared political dialogue.
