Washington, DC – US media outlets reported that the Department of Homeland Security has begun a comprehensive review of immigration and naturalization files for citizens of countries designated by the US administration as “high-risk.” Somalia is among the countries targeted. This review is part of a campaign to investigate potential fraudulent applications for US citizenship.

Tax fraud and immigration fraud

This move comes in the wake of a massive fraud case in Minnesota involving dozens of Somali-Americans who allegedly misused government assistance programs. Authorities are currently investigating whether some of those granted citizenship used deception or concealed crucial information during their naturalization process. This provides authorities with a legal basis for what is known as “denaturalization.”

In a statement carried by Fox News and republished by the White House, Assistant Secretary of Homeland Security Trisha McLaughlin affirmed that U.S. law is clear and strict on this matter. It permits the revocation of citizenship from anyone proven to have obtained it through misleading information.

Political escalation and human rights concerns

These measures coincide with escalating calls from Republican lawmakers not only to revoke citizenship but also to deport anyone found to be involved in fraud. This has caused widespread anxiety and panic within the Somali community and among civil rights organizations.

Key features of the new policy

Expanding powers: Although denaturalization was a rare procedure (historically averaging 11 cases per year), the current administration has begun to expand its use as a deterrent tool.

The hardline approach: Since President Trump took office last January, deportation campaigns and the cancellation of permanent resident cards (Green Cards) have increased.

Digital surveillance: The new scrutiny included reviewing the content that migrants post on social media to assess “security eligibility”.

Human rights criticisms

Human rights organizations have criticized these policies, arguing that they undermine fundamental constitutional rights such as fair trial guarantees and freedom of expression. In contrast, the Trump administration and its allies insist that these measures are “necessary and unavoidable” to bolster homeland security. They aim to protect the integrity of the U.S. immigration system from abuse.

As the scrutiny continues, observers believe the Somali community, one of the largest Muslim communities in the United States, could find itself at the center of a complex legal and political confrontation that could set legal precedents in the history of American immigration.
