As-Suwayda, Syria – The Supreme Legal Committee in As-Suwayda announced on Wednesday its rejection of the roadmap announced by the Syrian government.

The latter was accused of shirking its responsibility for what happened in Sweida, and demanded the independence of the governorate or the self-management of its affairs.

The statement, issued by the legal committee affiliated with the spiritual leader of the Druze monotheist sect, Sheikh Hikmat al-Hijri, explained that “the government’s statement referred to the call for an independent international investigation committee into Syria, but it returned to confirm that accountability will be carried out in accordance with Syrian law”. We believe that this contradiction empties the international investigation of its content, as it is not reasonable for the accused to be the judge himself.

The committee added: “The government and its security and military agencies were direct partners in the massacres and violations that affected thousands of civilians, including dead, missing and kidnapped. Denying responsibility does not open a path to reconciliation, but rather perpetuates a policy of impunity.

She also pointed out that the Syrian judiciary is politicized and subordinate to the executive authority, and is unable to provide any guarantees for fair trials.

Therefore, according to the committee, any talk of accountability through Syrian law is nothing more than a formal facade to whitewash crimes.

An attempt to deepen the internal division

The committee considered that talking about local councils and joint police forces is an attempt to impose new guardianship over Suwayda and sow discord among its people by promoting names that have lost societal legitimacy and betrayed the issues of their people.

In this context, she stressed that this blatant approach will only deepen internal division.

The committee stressed that “the people of Suwayda have the legal and moral right to freely and independently determine their fate, whether through self-administration or secession, as it is the last option available to ensure their security, dignity and existence”.

It also called on the international community not to recognize any arrangements imposed forcibly on the people of Sweida.

In addition to ensuring an independent investigation and international accountability mechanisms away from the dominance of the Syrian government, and supporting the people of Suwayda in determining their fate.

The Legal Committee pointed out that what happened in July 2025 were “full-fledged crimes against humanity”.

She stressed that confronting these crimes should not be through local judicial plays, but rather through a transparent international process that leads to holding the perpetrators accountable and guaranteeing the right of the people of Sweida to freedom and self-determination.
