Baghdad, Iraq – On Monday, Iraqi President Nizar Amidi tasked Ali al-Zaidi, the Coordination Framework’s nominee, with forming the new Iraqi government.
The appointment came after the bloc officially announced his nomination for the position.
In a statement, the Iraqi president said the appointment was made “in accordance with constitutional responsibilities.”
He added that this step fulfills constitutional requirements.
He also expressed his hope that al-Zaidi would succeed in forming a strong government
that meets the aspirations of the Iraqi people, and called on political forces
to support him in order to expedite the political process.
Political support to end the deadlock
For its part, the Coordination Framework announced in a statement the selection of al-Zidi as its candidate
for prime minister following a meeting held at the Government Palace in Baghdad.
The statement also confirmed that the decision came after considering several candidates,
with the aim of choosing a figure capable of managing the current phase and its challenges.
The statement noted the Framework leaders’ praise for the performance of the previous government,
headed by Mohammed Shia al-Sudani, particularly in addressing economic and political challenges.
It also emphasized the importance of political consensus to overcome the current deadlock.
Concessions to facilitate agreement
The Coordination Framework also commended the stances of political leaders,
including Nouri al-Maliki and Mohammed Shia al-Sudani, after they withdrew their candidacies.
This move aimed to facilitate political consensus and the selection of a widely accepted candidate.
Ali al-Zaidi holds academic qualifications in finance and law.
He has held several positions, including chairmanship of the boards of economic and educational institutions.
His membership in the Iraqi Bar Association further strengthens his chances of leading the next phase.
The Iraqi public is awaiting the next steps in forming the new government,
amid hopes for ending the political deadlock and achieving political and economic stability in the country.
