Moscow, Russia – The Russian Ministry of Defense announced today the successful completion of another prisoner exchange with the Ukrainian side. The operation resulted in the release of 103 Russian servicemen who had been held captive by Ukrainian forces. In return, Moscow handed over 103 Ukrainian military personnel to Kyiv. The exchange was facilitated by the United Arab Emirates. This step comes as part of ongoing efforts to address this humanitarian issue, which has remained unresolved between the two countries since the outbreak of the conflict. The relevant official bodies are closely monitoring the situation.
The Russian Ministry of Defense stated in its official announcement that the release involved the return of 103 Russian soldiers from territories under Kyiv’s control. In exchange, the same number of Ukrainian prisoners of war were handed over. The ministry clarified that the released Russian servicemen are currently in Belarus, where Human Rights Commissioner Yana Lantratova is providing them with support and on-the-ground monitoring. This is in preparation for their imminent return home.
Healthcare and rehabilitation of military personnel returning to Russia
The ministry confirmed that returning Russian servicemen will undergo comprehensive care programs immediately upon arrival on Russian soil. They will receive necessary medical treatment and psychological and physical rehabilitation services at various specialized medical facilities and hospitals. These hospitals belong to the Russian Ministry of Defense. This will be done to ensure their well-being and help them overcome the effects of their time as prisoners of war.
The humanitarian role of the United Arab Emirates in mediation
In a related context, the Russian Ministry of Defense praised the prominent humanitarian role played by the United Arab Emirates. It affirmed that the completion of this prisoner exchange was made possible thanks to the commendable humanitarian mediation efforts undertaken by Abu Dhabi. These efforts facilitated communication and brought the Russian and Ukrainian sides closer together. This initiative was part of a series of previous successful prisoner exchanges supported by the UAE’s diplomatic efforts. The UAE’s good offices also contributed to easing the humanitarian tensions arising from the crisis.
