Seoul, South Korea – The South Korean military announced that North Korea launched approximately 10 short-range ballistic missiles into the sea, marking a new escalation on the Korean Peninsula. The South Korean Joint Chiefs of Staff reported detecting the missile launches from the Pyongyang area at around 5:00 PM on Thursday. In its initial statement, the Joint Chiefs of Staff indicated that no further precise technical details regarding the missiles’ range or trajectory were immediately available. They also noted that the armed forces have intensified monitoring and vigilance in anticipation of any further launches in the near future.
Tripartite coordination and military alert
These developments on the ground come as South Korea and the United States conduct their joint military exercises this week. These exercises have been scaled back in duration and scope at the direction of the US administration, which is seeking to reduce tensions. In this context, the Joint Chiefs of Staff confirmed that Seoul, Washington, and Tokyo are maintaining a state of full readiness. They also clarified that there is an intensive and immediate exchange of information regarding North Korean ballistic missiles to ensure regional security.
Context of tension and repeated missile tests
The latest launch comes just a week after Pyongyang fired a short-range ballistic missile eastward on August 12. Seoul and its Western allies view these repeated tests as a continuing challenge to regional stability. They also see them as a direct response to joint military exercises conducted by South Korea and its allies in the region.
