Abu Dhabi, UAE – Sheikh Abdullah bin Zayed Al Nahyan, Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Foreign Affairs, spoke by telephone with Rafael Grossi, Director General of the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA).
During the call, he strongly condemned the attack on the Barakah Nuclear Power Plant,
which resulted in a fire at an electrical generator outside the plant’s perimeter in the Al Dhafra region.
Sheikh Abdullah bin Zayed emphasized that targeting civilian facilities
and vital infrastructure constitutes a flagrant violation of international law.
He also stressed the UAE’s right to take all necessary measures to protect its security, territorial integrity,
and citizens, in accordance with international law.
Emphasis on nuclear safety and international cooperation
During the call, the two sides discussed cooperation between the UAE and the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA).
They also discussed ways to enhance this cooperation across various fields,
supporting the peaceful use of nuclear energy in accordance with the highest standards of safety, security, and non-proliferation.
Sheikh Abdullah bin Zayed affirmed the UAE’s commitment to supporting
the IAEA’s pivotal role in promoting nuclear security and safety regionally and internationally.
This comes amidst the growing challenges facing the energy sector.
Assurances regarding the safety of the station
Emirati authorities had previously confirmed that the incident resulted in no injuries.
It also did not affect radiation safety levels at the Barakah Nuclear Energy Plant, with the units continuing to operate normally.
This communication comes within the framework of ongoing Emirati-international coordination to monitor the repercussions of the incident.
It also aims to strengthen efforts to protect vital facilities and prevent any threats to regional security and stability.
