Astana, Kazakhstan – Bashirat Khrodi, a player in the UAE national judo team, won silver in the under-52 kg weight category, at the opening of the Astana Grand Slam tournament, on Friday.
295 male and female players are currently participating in the tournament held in Astana, with a total prize pool of 154,000 euros.
The Judo Federation confirmed that Khrodi was a strong contender for the gold medal in the final match against French champion Blandine Pont. Before she suffered a sudden injury to her ankle, she chose to continue the fight, refusing to withdraw.
The winners were crowned by Dr. Nasser Al Tamimi, Member of the National Olympic Committee and Secretary General of the International Federation. Yerlan Oganbayev, Director of Sports of Kazakhstan.
The gold medal placed France at the top of the overall standings with two golds and a silver, while the tournament concludes on Sunday.
The UAE national team will compete in the heavyweight competition with the participation of players Aram Georgian (under 90 kg), facing Russian champion Khubetsov Aland. Omar Marouf (over 100 kg) faced the winner of the match between India’s Singh Dayan and Kazakhstan’s champion Krik Galmjan.
