Cairo, Egypt – The Arab Parliament’s Committees on Social, Educational, Cultural, Women’s, and Youth Affairs, and on Economic and Financial Affairs, discussed several issues related to supporting sustainable development and promoting the blue economy. This took place within the framework of the standing committees’ meetings, which aim to formulate visions and recommendations that contribute to advancing development in Arab countries.
Members of both committees emphasized the importance of intensifying joint Arab efforts to achieve the Sustainable Development Goals through the adoption of balanced economic and social policies. They also stressed the need to enhance investment in productive sectors and expand social protection programs, which will positively impact growth rates and improve the quality of life for citizens.
The discussions addressed the importance of the blue economy as a key driver of economic growth, given the promising opportunities it offers in fisheries, maritime transport, coastal tourism, and renewable energy. Furthermore, its role in conserving marine resources and ensuring their sustainable use was highlighted.
Participants emphasized the need to develop Arab legislation that supports the blue economy and to strengthen cooperation among Arab states in scientific research, innovation, and the exchange of expertise. This would contribute to maximizing the benefits derived from marine resources and improving their management efficiency in accordance with the principles of sustainable development.
The participants also emphasized the importance of strengthening partnerships between governments, the private sector, and regional and international institutions to support development projects with both environmental and economic dimensions. They further called for encouraging investments that achieve a balance between economic growth and environmental protection.
The meetings concluded with an emphasis on continuing coordination among the specialized committees of the Arab Parliament and submitting recommendations to the relevant authorities. This measure supports joint Arab action and strengthens efforts to achieve sustainable development and economic prosperity in the Arab region.
