Madrid, Spain – In a high-profile security operation reflecting close cooperation between European security agencies, the Spanish National Police announced Sunday evening the arrest of one of the most prominent leaders of the powerful Italian ‘Ndrangheta crime syndicate, known in criminal circles as “Don Micone.” This arrest culminates months of intensive joint investigations between authorities in Madrid and Rome. With this, the case of one of the most elusive fugitives in Europe has been closed.
Who is “Don Micon”?
Prosecutors in Italy’s Calabria region, the organization’s stronghold, confirmed that the arrested man is Domenico Pavigliani, a high-ranking leader in the ‘Ndrangheta, one of the world’s most dangerous and powerful mafia organizations. Pavigliani, 65, had been a fugitive and wanted on a European arrest warrant since 2022. Italy is pursuing him on serious criminal charges ranging from murder to violent crimes. The charges also include large-scale drug trafficking and sophisticated money laundering.
Details of the raid
Spanish forces located Don Micon in the city of Soria, about 200 kilometers northeast of Madrid. Once his presence was confirmed, police launched a swift raid that resulted in his arrest without any injuries. According to the official statement, the necessary legal procedures for his extradition to Italy have already begun and will be implemented in the coming days. There, he will stand trial in Italy to serve his 19-year prison sentence.
A history filled with pursuits and escapes
Paviglianti’s history with Spanish prisons is long and complex. Spanish newspapers such as El Mundo and El País have reported that he was arrested several times previously. The first arrest was in 1996, after which he was extradited to Italy in 1999. He spent nearly 20 years behind bars there. However, he was released earlier due to an “error in calculating the legal term,” a decision that sparked considerable controversy at the time. In 2021, he was arrested again in Madrid, but was later released after his legal team claimed he had served his sentence.
This latest arrest is a significant blow to the ‘Ndrangheta. It also strengthens international efforts to dismantle the Italian mafia networks whose illicit activities have extended across national borders. These efforts underscore that justice, though sometimes delayed by legal loopholes, ultimately catches up with the heads of organized crime.
