Madrid, Spain – Spanish press reports have revealed updates on the investigations being conducted by the International Federation of Association Football (FIFA) regarding the events that followed the 2026 World Cup final, which may result in sanctions against a number of players and members of the coaching staff of the Argentine national team.

The Argentine national team had lost the final match against the Spanish national team by one goal to nil, in the match that was held at the “MetLife” stadium, after Ferran Torres scored the winning goal in the second extra period, leading “La Roja” to win the world title.

The Spanish newspaper Mundo Deportivo reported that the authority responsible for reviewing the case received the complete investigation file, which includes the referee’s report, along with the match observer’s report and video footage, in preparation for making the final decision within about 15 days.

The newspaper added that Leandro Paredes is the most likely to be punished, as the disciplinary regulations stipulate that he could be suspended for no less than three matches, due to the violent behavior attributed to him towards the Spanish duo Eric Garcia and Javi after the final whistle.

Nahuel Molina also faces a possible punishment, after being accused of assaulting Spain captain Rodri during the clashes that followed the match.

The investigations were not limited to the players, as they also included Roberto Fabian Ayala, the assistant coach in Lionel Scaloni’s coaching staff, after reports indicated his involvement in the assault on Dani Olmo, and he may face a one-match suspension if the incident is proven.

FIFA is waiting for the disciplinary procedures to be completed and all evidence to be reviewed before officially announcing the sanctions, in one of the most prominent cases witnessed by the tournament after the curtain fell on the 2026 World Cup competitions.
