Beijing, China – A 5.0-magnitude earthquake struck Yunnan province in southwestern China on Tuesday evening, according to the China Earthquake Networks Centre (CENC), with local authorities reporting no immediate casualties or severe structural damage.

Epicenter Located in Mojiang County

The CENC reported that the tremor occurred at 7:43 p.m. local time (11:43 GMT), placing the epicenter in Mojiang County within Pu’er City, Yunnan Province.

State news agency Xinhua reported that residents in Mojiang and surrounding areas felt distinct shaking, prompting brief caution among local communities.

Ongoing Damage Assessment and Emergency Response

Emergency management departments and local administration teams in Yunnan confirmed that no reports of injuries, fatalities, or structural damage have been received following initial field evaluations. Inspection teams continue to assess rural dwellings and municipal infrastructure across the county.

Yunnan province experiences frequent seismic activity due to its geological position in southwestern China. Emergency agencies maintain continuous monitoring for potential aftershocks while advising residents to follow established safety protocols.

The magnitude 5.0 earthquake in Yunnan’s Mojiang County caused noticeable shaking but resulted in no immediate casualties or structural damage, with Chinese emergency services actively surveying the region.
