Washington, United States – The US Treasury Secretary announced in an interview with Fox News that the United States has observed a significant decline in purchases of Iranian oil, pointing to the tangible impact of Washington’s sustained economic leverage and sanctions enforcement on Tehran’s crude exports.

Declining Purchases and Growing Buyer Caution

The Treasury Secretary highlighted that the drop in demand stems from international buyers exercising heightened caution over potential legal and financial risks, alongside the enforcement of secondary sanctions. He noted that even major importers like China, which previously absorbed Iranian volumes at steep discounts, have scaled back their purchasing activity.

The Secretary emphasized that curtailing Iran’s oil revenue remains a central pillar of the administration’s economic strategy to constrain Tehran’s financial capacity, adding that the Treasury continues to strictly monitor maritime shipping channels and financial networks facilitating energy trades.

Energy Markets and Supply Dynamics

These developments come amid broader volatility in global oil markets, shaped by geopolitical tensions and transit security risks across critical Middle Eastern shipping corridors.

Energy market analysts and investors are closely observing the long-term sustainability of the drop and its broader implications for regional supply-demand balances, particularly as Washington maintains strict oversight on shadow fleet tankers and financial intermediaries involved in Iranian crude transactions.

The observed reduction in Iranian oil purchases underscores the effectiveness of US financial sanctions in deterring major buyers, constricting Iran’s hydrocarbon revenue streams and prompting global markets to adjust supply chains accordingly.
