Washington, DC – As the second round of group stage matches intensifies at the 2026 FIFA World Cup, speculation and complex calculations are mounting regarding which teams will secure a place in the Round of 32, particularly those finishing third in their respective groups.

Thanks to the new and expanded format adopted by FIFA, qualification is no longer an impossible task for teams that initially falter. In fact, securing a spot as one of the “best third-placed teams” has become a realistic and attainable goal for many national teams.

4 points… the safety valve

A detailed analysis by Football Meets Data, a website specializing in football data, revealed that collecting four points in the group stage is practically a guarantee of qualification for the knockout stage (round of 32).

This tally puts the team in a very comfortable position among the best third-placed teams. It also significantly increases their chances of overcoming other teams that might finish with fewer points.

The battle for three points and goal difference

As for the teams that finish their groups with only three points, the analysis revealed that the path to qualification will not be easy, but rather subject to crucial criteria.

In this case, goal difference—and perhaps goals scored—will be the deciding factor in determining the eight teams that will qualify. These eight teams will complete the list of qualifiers from among the best third-placed teams across the 12 groups.

Therefore, any significant goal difference could mean the end of a team’s journey in the tournament.

FIFA’s new system and opening the door to opportunities

These calculations come under FIFA’s new system, which saw an increase in the number of teams and groups, creating a different dynamic in the tournament. With 12 groups, the “points game” has become more exciting, with everything remaining open until the final moments of the third round.

Experts emphasize that the teams with the fighting spirit and the ability to handle the crucial third-round matches will be the ones to secure the “best third-place” spots. With the competition wide open, all eyes remain on the standings. A single surprising victory in the final round could turn the tables and give an underdog team a golden opportunity to continue their dream run in the Round of 32.
