Cairo, Egypt – Recent reports have sparked a widespread debate regarding the environmental impact of using generative artificial intelligence tools in our daily lives.

These reports indicated that sending a single email generated via models like ChatGPT might consume an amount of water reaching approximately half a liter.

This consumption falls within the framework of what is known as the requirements of massive data centers for cooling and energy to maintain the stability of their devices and servers.

Data Centers and Resource Consumption

The data suggests that operating these AI models relies on massive data centers that require huge amounts of electricity to ensure their operation.

In addition, these centers need cooling systems that partially rely on water to keep the devices’ temperatures within the allowed range.

These facts open the door for discussion about the true environmental footprint of modern technologies and their sustainability in light of the rapid expansion in their use.

Pressure on Digital Infrastructure

These accusations come at a time when global reliance on artificial intelligence is increasing in various fields, from text writing to data analysis.

This global expansion raises the volume of pressure on digital infrastructure, raising environmental concerns related to the efficiency of energy and water resource use.

Divergent Views on the Figures

In contrast, technical experts believe that these figures need further verification and precision to reflect the actual reality of resource consumption in these centers.

Experts point out that resource consumption varies significantly depending on the size of the model used, the nature of the queries, and the efficiency of the cooling systems in the center.

They also emphasize the role of renewable energy systems adopted in some modern data centers in mitigating the environmental impact of these technologies.

The Need for Balance

With the continued expansion in the use of artificial intelligence, the debate is escalating about the necessity of finding a precise balance between rapid technical development and reducing environmental impact.

International concerns are growing over energy and water consumption in the technology sector, prompting major companies to seek more sustainable and eco-friendly technical solutions.
