Nouakchott, Mauritania — The Mauritanian coast guard rescues migrants following a major operation off the coast of Nouadhibou. Rescue teams saved more than 300 individuals stranded aboard a drifting wooden vessel. The overcrowded boat was found navigating difficult humanitarian conditions in the Atlantic Ocean.

Official statements confirmed that the rescue operation took place overnight between Wednesday and Thursday. The vessel originally departed from Gambia heading towards European shores. Emergency teams intervened swiftly as the Mauritanian coast guard rescues migrants facing severe sea hazards.

Passenger Nationalities and Humanitarian Situation

The rescued group contained 315 individuals from various West African nations. Reports confirmed 191 citizens from Senegal, 123 from Gambia, and one national from Mali. The passengers included women, young minors, and infants suffering from exhaustion.

This mission occurred shortly after another operation where the Mauritanian coast guard rescues migrants stranded at sea. Authorities saved 42 individuals days prior when their boat engine failed. Search and rescue operations remain active across regional territorial waters.

Atlantic Migration Route and Ocean Hazards

Thousands of West African migrants attempt the Atlantic maritime route toward Spain’s Canary Islands. This sea corridor is recognized globally as one of the most dangerous migration passages. Most journeys rely on fragile wooden craft unequipped for deep-ocean navigation.

Mauritanian maritime authorities continue monitoring territorial waters to mitigate irregular migration risks. National coast guard units remain on high alert to handle ongoing maritime emergencies.
