Washington, DC – US Southern Command (SOUTHCOM) released video footage documenting the sinking of a vessel in international waters of the eastern Pacific Ocean. This joint security action followed confirmation that the vessel was operating as a floating fuel station and was also involved in supporting and financing international drug trafficking operations in the region.
Details of the process and joint coordination
The operation was conducted under the direct command of U.S. Southern Command chief, General Francis Donovan, and in full coordination with the Ecuadorian government. The Combined Joint Task Force – Western Hemisphere successfully located and intercepted the vessel. This ship was already on the U.S. sanctions list. Intelligence reports confirmed that the vessel was operating specifically to support the “Los Choneros” organization, which authorities classify as a terrorist group due to its extensive criminal activities.
Storming and clearing the USS San Antonio
The operation involved a precise intervention by U.S. Marines. Sailors from the USS San Antonio (LPD 17) also participated. The forces successfully intercepted, boarded, inspected, and cleared the target vessel with utmost professionalism and without incident or injuries. The safety of the personnel on board was paramount, and they were safely evacuated and transported to Ecuadorian waters. Following the completion of the clearing operation and securing of the site, U.S. forces sank the vessel.

Commenting on the operation, General Francis Donovan stated, “Today’s operation is a stark example of the Alliance of the Americas’ ability to dismantle the sophisticated tactics employed by drug cartels.” Donovan added that working alongside partners in Ecuador directly contributed to delivering a decisive blow to a terrorist operation responsible for transporting and distributing massive quantities of drugs across the Pacific Ocean.
