Beijing, China – A new natural disaster struck Xicang, southwest China, after a massive mudslide killed seven people. The search continues for 554 people who went missing after the landslide at a border port with Nepal. The mudslide caused extensive damage to the area surrounding the port, closing several roads and disrupting some communication and electricity services. This has hampered rescue efforts.

Chinese authorities have deployed specialized teams and heavy equipment to the site of the accident, while simultaneously intensifying search operations for the missing. This comes amid concerns that landslides may continue due to the weather conditions and the mountainous terrain. The disaster occurs as parts of the border region between China and Nepal are experiencing severe weather. This weather has caused flooding and landslides, damaged infrastructure, isolated several areas, and disrupted transportation.

Emergency teams are continuing to assess the extent of the damage and work to secure the areas surrounding the collapse site. Authorities are also monitoring the situation closely, anticipating further collapses that could complicate rescue operations. The large number of missing persons raises concerns that the death toll could rise in the coming hours. Rescue efforts continue under extremely difficult conditions to reach those trapped and stranded.
