Beirut, Lebanon – Lebanese Parliament Speaker Nabih Berri affirmed that Lebanon does not object to the withdrawal of Hezbollah elements from areas south of the Litani River, provided that this is accompanied by a complete Israeli withdrawal from Lebanese territories that remain disputed or where Israeli military presence is maintained. He also stressed that any security arrangements must be based on the principle of reciprocity and respect for Lebanese sovereignty.
Berri explained that achieving stability on the southern border requires a mutual commitment from all parties. At the same time, he indicated that Lebanon is committed to implementing relevant international resolutions to ensure an end to repeated violations and maintain security in the border region.
He added that any sustainable solution to the situation in the south cannot be limited to one party. Rather, it must include a comprehensive approach to addressing all outstanding issues, foremost among them the Israeli withdrawal from the disputed territories. He also stressed the need to halt military operations that escalate tensions.
These statements come as regional and international diplomatic efforts continue to de-escalate tensions on the Lebanese-Israeli border. This comes amid fears of a wider confrontation and its impact on regional stability.
Observers believe that Berri’s stance reflects Lebanon’s insistence on linking any future security arrangements to clear and reciprocal guarantees. This aims to strike a balance between security requirements and the rights of the Lebanese state, amidst ongoing efforts to find a settlement that reduces the likelihood of military confrontation. It also paves the way for a more stable phase on the southern border.
These developments are being closely monitored internationally, particularly given the continued diplomatic efforts to solidify calm. These efforts also focus on implementing understandings that would reduce tensions and enhance the chances of reaching a long-term settlement. This settlement aims to preserve the region’s security and stability.
