Rome, Italy – Italian Elisa Longo Borghini, a player on the Emirates women’s cycling team, has strengthened her position in the overall standings of the Giro d’Italia women’s race. After succeeding today in reducing the gap with its direct competitions during the seventh stage, it entered the decisive stages of the race in high spirits.

Longo Borghini managed to gain 5 seconds over a number of her most prominent competitors in the overall standings. In a result that reflects the continuous improvement in its level as the race approaches its decisive stages.

Although Dutchwoman Anna van der Breggen retained the overall lead and the pink shirt, her compatriot Demi Fullering was in second place, one minute behind. Longo Borghini advanced to sixth place in the overall classification, two minutes and 7 seconds behind the lead, two stages before the end of the race.

The seventh stage extended for a distance of 159 kilometers between Sorbolo Mitsani and Salici Terme. It witnessed many attacks and accidents, before an advanced group formed in the final part of the race. It included Longo Borghini and her colleague Silvia Persico.
