Niamey, Niger – Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov arrived in Niger on an official visit aimed at strengthening security and defense partnerships with the Sahel Alliance countries. This visit comes as part of Moscow’s ongoing efforts to expand its political and military influence in the region, which is facing escalating security challenges.
Lavrov is scheduled to hold a series of meetings with senior Nigerien officials. He will also meet with representatives of the Sahel Alliance to discuss ways to develop cooperation in the areas of defense, counterterrorism, and military training. In addition, the talks will focus on strengthening political and economic coordination between the two sides.
The visit comes amid growing relations between Russia and the Sahel Alliance, which includes Niger, Mali, and Burkina Faso. These countries are seeking to diversify their security partnerships following a decline in military cooperation with some Western powers. They are also focusing on building their capacity to counter armed groups operating in the region.
The talks will also cover cooperation in the energy, mining, and investment sectors. Mechanisms for supporting regional stability and promoting economic development will also be discussed, contributing to addressing the security and humanitarian challenges facing the Sahel region.
Observers believe that Lavrov’s visit reflects the ongoing shift in the balance of power within the African continent. This comes as Moscow seeks to expand its strategic presence through security and economic partnerships with a number of African countries, particularly in the Sahel region, which is of increasing geopolitical importance at both the regional and international levels.
