Moscow, Russia – On Tuesday, Moscow issued a strongly worded warning to the Baltic states, accusing them of direct involvement in hostile acts against the Russian Federation by providing their territories as platforms to support the Ukrainian war effort. Furthermore, Russian Deputy Foreign Minister Mikhail Galuzin told Sputnik news agency that these countries are “playing with fire.” He also stressed that they are fully aware of the consequences of their actions.
Threats of retaliation
Galuzin’s remarks follow warnings he issued on Monday, when he stressed that Latvia’s involvement in any strikes deep inside Russia “will not go unpunished.” The Russian official explained that Russian intelligence agencies are working to “record decision-making points” precisely. By this, he meant the locations from which provocations against civilians or drone launches are planned. In addition, they are monitoring the production and final assembly centers for these drones.
Russian intelligence: The coordinates are known.
In a related development, Russia’s Foreign Intelligence Service (SVR) revealed that it had detected preparations by Ukrainian armed forces for what it termed “new terrorist attacks” targeting Russian territory. According to intelligence reports, Kyiv aims to use the Baltic states as launching points for drones. This would allow Kyiv to reduce the time it takes for the drones to reach Russian targets and evade air defense systems.
The intelligence press office confirmed that Moscow possesses precise coordinates of decision-making centers within Latvia. It also emphasized that “the country’s NATO membership will not shield those cooperating with Kyiv from Russian retaliation.”
Escalation in regional tensions
These statements signal a new phase of tension between Moscow and the Baltic states (Estonia, Latvia, and Lithuania), which are among Kyiv’s staunchest supporters within the European Union and NATO. Russia views the strict adherence these countries show to the directives of their Western allies as putting them in direct conflict with Russian security interests.
This escalating Russian rhetoric reflects a concern that the Baltic states could become forward operating bases for Ukrainian military operations. Moscow views this as crossing a red line. While the Baltic states reaffirm their commitment to their sovereignty and their support for Ukraine within the framework of the Western alliance, these Russian warnings present them with complex security challenges. Moscow is clearly indicating the possibility of extending the conflict beyond Ukraine’s borders if their territories are used as launching pads for attacks.
