Ankara, Turkey – US President Donald Trump met with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky on the sidelines of the NATO summit. Discussions focused on ways to end the war in Ukraine and advance diplomatic efforts to reach a lasting political settlement.
The two leaders discussed the latest developments on the ground. They also discussed the prospects for resuming negotiations between Moscow and Kyiv, in light of international efforts to establish a ceasefire and alleviate the humanitarian and economic consequences of the years-long conflict.
During the meeting, Trump emphasized the importance of reaching an agreement to end the war as quickly as possible. He also noted that the US administration is continuing its contacts with various parties to support any initiative that could achieve a lasting peace, preserve stability in Europe, and reduce the escalation of international tensions.
For his part, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky stressed the need for continued international support for his country. He affirmed that any political settlement must guarantee the preservation of Ukraine’s sovereignty and security and must also be based on the principles of international law.
The talks also covered defense cooperation between Washington and Kyiv, as well as reconstruction efforts. The two sides also discussed coordinating positions with NATO allies on the future of European security and the challenges posed by the war in the region.
The meeting comes at a time of ongoing international diplomatic efforts to revive negotiations between Russia and Ukraine. There are hopes that the consultations taking place at the NATO summit will help bridge the gaps and advance efforts to reach a political solution that ends the conflict.
