Islamabad, Pakistan – Pakistani Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif accused India of increasingly resorting to what he called “covert tactics and the use of proxies” in an attempt to destabilize Pakistan. Sharif made the remarks during a speech at the graduation ceremony of the Pakistan Naval Academy in Karachi on Saturday.
Confronting multiple threats
In a resolute address, Sharif asserted that Pakistan faces “multifaceted conflicts and security challenges.” He pointed to a “dangerous mix” of internal and external threats. Referring to India, he said, “Our eastern neighbor, which suffered a humiliating defeat in the conflict last May, is seeking to undermine the hard-won peace and stability in our country.”
The Prime Minister emphasized that his country’s armed forces are simultaneously continuing to confront the threat of “foreign-backed terrorism” coming across the western border. He affirmed that the Pakistani people stand united behind their army. He also expressed Islamabad’s unwavering commitment to defending just causes, foremost among them the cause of the Kashmiris and the Palestinian people in Gaza.
Pakistan is a regional “peacemaker”
On the diplomatic front, Sharif highlighted his country’s role as an international mediator, noting Islamabad’s successful efforts in brokering the “historic memorandum of understanding” between the United States and Iran, which he signed in his capacity as mediator. He commended the efforts of the Chief of Army Staff, Field Marshal Asim Munir, in bridging the gap between the parties to promote regional peace and stability. He also considered the recent visit of Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian to Pakistan as international recognition of Pakistan’s pivotal role in promoting stability in the region.
Maritime security as a strategic necessity
Speaking about the strategic importance of the seas, Sharif emphasized that maritime security has become an “absolute necessity” for the global economy and international supply chains. He pledged his government’s commitment to strengthening the Pakistani navy to become a regional stabilizing force. He also noted the navy’s adoption of the latest technologies and artificial intelligence to address emerging challenges.
In closing, Sharif addressed the new graduates, urging them to uphold the values of courage and integrity. He said, “Calm waters do not test the sea; it is stormy seas and raging winds that test one’s resolve.” The ceremony was attended by young officers from several brotherly nations, reflecting the prestigious training standing of the Pakistan Naval Academy.
