Tehran, Iran – Iranian authorities confirmed on Saturday that the port of Sirik in Hormozgan province is safe and undamaged. They denied that it sustained any material or operational damage as a result of the recent US airstrikes on targets inside Iranian territory.
Official confirmation that operations are continuing
The director of East Hormozgan Ports, in statements carried by the Iranian news agency Mehr, clarified that the port’s infrastructure and operational facilities are functioning normally and stably. The official also indicated that the explosions heard by residents in the vicinity of Sirik, specifically near the Taherouyeh dock, had no negative impact on the safety of vital port facilities. These statements came in response to media reports suggesting that the strategic port had been damaged in the recent attacks.
Context of military escalation
The US Central Command (CENTCOM) had previously announced a series of precision strikes targeting coastal radar sites and military facilities linked to Iran’s ballistic missile and drone programs.
Washington explained that this operation was a direct response to the drone attack on a commercial container ship in the Strait of Hormuz. This incident had heightened tensions in international shipping lanes.
In the aftermath of the strikes, Tehran swiftly denounced the US action as a blatant act of aggression against its sovereignty. Iranian official sources asserted that the US attacks targeted purely military objectives and did not strike ports or vital civilian infrastructure.
In a show of force, the Iranian Revolutionary Guard Corps later announced retaliatory attacks, employing an arsenal of missiles and drones to target US sites and bases in the region. This signals a new round of open escalation.
The strategic importance of the port of Serik
The port of Sirik, located on the eastern coast of Hormozgan province overlooking the Sea of Oman, holds significant geopolitical importance due to its proximity to the Strait of Hormuz. The strait is one of the world’s most vital waterways, through which approximately one-fifth of global oil trade passes daily.
With escalating military tensions between Washington and Tehran, Iranian ports near this crucial waterway have come under increased international scrutiny. Concerns have grown that these locations could become battlegrounds, jeopardizing the security of global energy supplies amid this heightened tension.
