Paris, France – French President Emmanuel Macron confirmed that the joint military mission formed by Paris and London to help secure shipping in the Strait of Hormuz is ready for immediate deployment. This readiness comes as a crucial step to support the recent peace agreement and end the conflict in the Middle East.
This announcement comes ahead of Macron’s hosting of US President Donald Trump at the upcoming G7 summit. Regional stability and securing maritime routes will also be high on the agenda. In a post on the X platform, Macron confirmed that “the assets of the British-French mission are in place and ready for deployment,” emphasizing that “the resumption of maritime traffic, without restrictions or fees, is a prerequisite for achieving regional stability and protecting the global economy.”
British support for the agreement
British Prime Minister Keir Starmer welcomed the historic agreement reached between the United States and Iran to end their war on Sunday.
In an official statement, Starmer reaffirmed his country’s firm stance, saying, “We are absolutely clear that freedom of navigation without tolls must be restored in the Strait of Hormuz,” considering it a cornerstone of international trade security.
Post-war phase
These international moves come in the wake of US President Donald Trump’s announcement last Thursday of a framework agreement with Iran to end the war that has been raging since February. The agreement stipulates the immediate reopening of the Strait of Hormuz to international shipping. The strait is a strategic waterway through which a large portion of the world’s oil passes.
This joint French-British military deployment reflects the international community’s commitment to ensuring there is no security vacuum in this vital region. The de facto closure of the Strait of Hormuz over the past months has disrupted global supply chains.
This mission aims to serve as an international safeguard to ensure all parties comply with the terms of the agreement. It also aims to provide the necessary security umbrella for the return of energy flows to their normal routes, thus ushering in a new era of stability in the Middle East after months of military tensions.
