Tel Aviv, Israel – In an escalatory move that redefines the rules of engagement in the region, Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu announced on Monday that he had given direct orders to the Israeli military to attack specific targets in the southern suburbs of Beirut, the Lebanese capital. The southern suburbs are considered a major stronghold of the Hezbollah militia.
Joint decision and security justifications
This announcement came in a joint statement issued by the offices of Prime Minister Netanyahu and Defense Minister Israel Katz. The statement indicated that the decision was in response to what it described as “Hezbollah’s continued violations and its ongoing targeting of Israeli cities and civilians.”
These developments on the ground follow reports in the Hebrew media, most notably one published by Channel 13 on Sunday. The reports revealed that the Israeli security establishment had already presented a comprehensive plan to the political leadership. The plan aims to intensify military activity on the northern border.
Expanding the scope of operations
According to the plan discussed during a series of intensive talks in Tel Aviv over the past two days, Israel is moving toward a significant escalation of operations deep inside Lebanese territory. There is a particular focus on targeted, high-profile attacks within the capital, Beirut. A security source confirmed earlier on Sunday that the final decision regarding the geographical scope and timing of these attacks rested with the Prime Minister. This was effectively reflected in Netanyahu’s orders today.
The collapse of American mediation
This Israeli escalation comes amid critical diplomatic developments; the American news website Axios reported that the latest efforts by the US administration to reach a ceasefire in Lebanon have failed.
Sources indicated that, in parallel with the failure of these negotiations, Israel has expanded its ground operations in the south. It is currently seeking a US “green light” to carry out broader strikes against Hezbollah targets in the heart of Beirut.
In a related development, the US position reflects a significant shift. A US official told Axios, “The United States does not expect Israel to tolerate continued attacks by a terrorist organization against its civilians.”
According to observers, this statement indicates that Washington has effectively lifted the pressure it previously exerted to prevent the expansion of operations into Beirut. This opens the door to a new and more violent phase in the ongoing conflict on the northern border. It also comes amid regional concerns that the situation could escalate into a full-blown confrontation that might extend beyond the usual geographical scope of military operations.
