Tel Aviv, Israel – A major spying scandal rocked Israel’s military and security establishment on Friday, following the formal indictment of three soldiers and a civilian for spying for Iranian intelligence. The investigation revealed that Tehran had successfully infiltrated the ranks of the Israeli army by recruiting individuals before their enlistment. This constitutes a serious security breach, occurring at a time of unprecedented regional tension.
Pre-recruitment and infiltration of the organization
Channel 12 reported that the shocking twist in the case is that the three soldiers were recruited by Iranian intelligence before officially joining the Israeli army. The report explained that Iranian intelligence targeted these individuals at an early stage to ensure they had “eyes” within the military establishment. The Shin Bet (Israel Security Agency), in cooperation with the Military Police, announced the arrest of the four suspects following close monitoring of their suspicious activities.
Photographing vital and military installations
The Israeli newspaper Yediot Aharonot reported that the indictment filed by the Israeli State Attorney’s Office includes charges that the cell documented and collected sensitive information about vital civilian and military sites.
The espionage operations included photographing major train stations, crowded shopping malls, and surveillance camera networks in strategic areas. They also targeted the Israeli Air Force Technical School, where some of the defendants were reportedly students. As a result, they gained access to highly sensitive technical and military details.
Security concerns and serious repercussions
Observers believe this case reflects the escalating intelligence war between Tel Aviv and Tehran. It also underscores the latter’s ability to penetrate deep into Israeli territory through cyberspace and human recruitment. These arrests come at a time when Israel is on high alert, amid growing concerns that the information gathered by these soldiers may have already reached operational units within the Iranian Revolutionary Guard. This could compromise the security of the vital installations that were identified. In response, Israeli security agencies have launched a broad review of the files of new recruits to ensure that no similar cells exist.
