Kyiv, Ukraine – Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy announced on Wednesday a significant development in Russian operations in the region, confirming that signal boosting equipment for Russian drones, operating from within Belarusian territory, has completely ceased functioning.
Zelenskyy explained in statements carried by Ukrainian media that this equipment stopped operating last Monday. This followed intense diplomatic pressure and an ultimatum issued by Kyiv to the Belarusian side.
Details of the warning and the Ukrainian move
Commenting on the nature of the outage, the Ukrainian president said, “I don’t know if the signal boosters have actually been removed from their locations, but what is certain is that they are no longer functioning.”
This announcement comes just one week after Zelenskyy leveled explicit accusations against Minsk. He accused it of allowing Russian forces to deploy sensitive technology intended to enhance the capabilities of its drones in combat.
Zelensky took a firm stance last Friday, issuing a direct and public warning to Belarusian President Alexander Lukashenko, demanding the immediate removal of this technology. Zelensky didn’t stop at simply demanding it; he followed it up with an escalating tone, stating, “If he doesn’t remove it, we will remove it.” This clearly indicates Ukraine’s readiness to take military action, if necessary, to protect its national security.
Strategic context and regional relations
This move comes amid repeated warnings from the Ukrainian president since the conflict began, regarding Belarus’s direct or indirect involvement in Russia’s war against Ukraine.
Alexander Lukashenko is known as one of Russian President Vladimir Putin’s closest allies. This makes Belarus a strategic staging ground for Russian operations.
The world vividly remembers the initial moments of Russia’s full-scale invasion in February 2022, when Moscow used Belarusian territory as a staging ground for its forces in an attempt to advance on the capital, Kyiv.
Although that offensive failed to achieve its strategic objectives and Russian forces were subsequently forced to withdraw after suffering heavy losses, the border with Belarus remains a constant source of concern for the Ukrainian leadership. This leadership is striving by all means to prevent the border from becoming a technological or military platform to support the Russian war effort. The Ukrainian leadership also affirms that it will not hesitate to make difficult decisions to ensure the neutralization of any technological threat targeting its territory.
