Kyiv, Ukraine – Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky announced that his country will participate in the upcoming NATO summit, scheduled to be held in Turkey. This participation reflects Kyiv’s continued efforts to strengthen its ties with the alliance amidst the ongoing conflict with Russia.
Zelensky explained that Ukraine’s participation aims to advance its NATO accession process. It also seeks to explore ways to increase military and political support from member states. He emphasized that his country “needs clear security guarantees” in the face of current challenges.
According to diplomatic sources, the summit is expected to feature extensive discussions on the future of the partnership between Ukraine and NATO. This is particularly relevant given the divisions within some member states regarding accelerating accession procedures, due to fears of direct escalation with Moscow.
Analysts believe that choosing Turkey to host the summit carries strategic significance. This stems from its balanced role between Russia and the West, which could grant it room to act as a mediator in several sensitive issues, most notably the Ukrainian crisis.
In contrast, Moscow has not issued an official comment on the announcement of its participation. However, Russian officials have previously considered any Ukrainian rapprochement with NATO a “direct threat to Russian national security.” This further complicates the situation.
This move comes at a time when Ukraine is seeking to solidify its position as a key partner of the alliance, benefiting from continued Western support. The issue of full membership, however, remains contingent on complex political and military calculations.
Observers assert that the upcoming NATO summit in Turkey could represent a pivotal moment in the relationship between Kyiv and the alliance, particularly if it results in new commitments that strengthen Ukraine’s position in the face of escalating challenges.
