Moscow, Russia – Russian Foreign Ministry spokeswoman Maria Zakharova launched a scathing attack on Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky, describing his recent actions as reflecting a “criminal mentality,” amid escalating political rhetoric and rapidly evolving developments on the battlefronts.
Zakharova: Zelensky is trying to implicate everyone in bloodshed.
In a press statement issued Wednesday and reported by Sputnik, Zakharova asserted that the Ukrainian president is acting according to “the logic of typical terrorism and the logic of a true criminal.”
She accused Zelensky of attempting to “stain everyone with blood” in order to create a situation of “mutual responsibility” with his Western allies. Zakharova added that the aim of this policy is to portray Zelensky as part of a group of countries that call themselves “civilized.” She further asserted that these powers “lost their humanity long ago” through their continued support for the conflict.
Western arms sales and Russian concerns
This diplomatic offensive comes at a time when the Russian Defense Ministry has revealed that it has detected trends among European countries to increase the production and supply of drones to Ukraine. According to Moscow, this support is intended to compensate for Ukrainian forces’ losses on the ground and to launch strikes deep inside Russia. Consequently, this further complicates the prospects for de-escalation.
Zelensky: We will counter Russian ambitions with “drones” and sanctions
On the other hand, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy asserted that his country has a “clear understanding” of the Russian military’s intentions and the priorities set by the political leadership in Moscow.
During a meeting with military leaders on Tuesday, Zelenskyy attributed the increased Russian military ambitions to what he described as a “decline in the level of sanctions and political pressure” from the West.
Zelensky pledged to counter these plans with a range of strategic tools, focusing on intensifying ground military operations and massively expanding the use of drones on the front lines, while simultaneously demanding stricter economic sanctions against Moscow.
These exchanges reflect the deadlock in diplomatic solutions. The parties trade accusations of “terrorism” and “aggression,” amidst intensive military preparations on both sides for a new round of direct confrontations.
