Islamabad, Pakistan – The Pakistani Foreign Ministry announced Wednesday that Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif will embark on a diplomatic tour of several key Middle Eastern countries. This comes amid intensified political activity reflecting Pakistan’s growing role in regional mediation, particularly as a new round of talks between the United States and Iran approaches. According to an official statement carried by the Pakistani newspaper Dawn, Sharif’s tour will run from April 15 to 18 and will include Saudi Arabia, Qatar, and Turkey. The visits to Saudi Arabia and Qatar will focus on strengthening bilateral relations and economic and political cooperation. In Turkey, he will attend the Antalya Diplomacy Forum, a prominent international platform for discussing global issues.
The Pakistani Prime Minister is expected to hold important bilateral meetings on the sidelines of the forum. These include a meeting with Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan, as well as with a number of other participating international leaders and officials. During his visit to Saudi Arabia, he will also meet with Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman to strengthen the strategic partnership between the two countries, particularly in the areas of investment, energy, and regional cooperation. This tour comes at a sensitive diplomatic juncture, as Pakistan recently hosted the first round of direct talks between the United States and Iran in Islamabad. This reinforces its position as a regional mediator in one of the most pressing international issues. There are also indications that a second round of negotiations could be held soon. Therefore, these moves carry added significance as part of a broader regional political effort to support the dialogue process.
This tour reflects several important implications, most notably Pakistan’s efforts to strengthen its role in regional mediation and coordinate its positions with influential powers in the region. It also supports efforts to de-escalate tensions between Washington and Tehran and to engage more actively in international affairs through multilateral diplomacy. This is clearly demonstrated by its participation in the Antalya Forum. Overall, these moves come at a crucial time, as international efforts intensify to reopen channels of dialogue between the United States and Iran. In this context, Pakistan’s role becomes a vital element in supporting regional stability and creating a conducive environment for negotiations that could have a significant impact on the region’s future.
