New York, USA – The UN Security Council on Wednesday adopted a Gulf-Jordanian draft resolution condemning Iranian attacks targeting Gulf states and Jordan, and demanding their immediate cessation, in a move reflecting international opposition to escalation in the region.

Resolution 2817 was adopted by a vote of 13 in favor. Russia and China abstained, and no country voted against it. The resolution condemned the Iranian attacks on residential areas and civilian infrastructure, and the resulting casualties and material damage.

Condemnation of attacks on civilians

The Security Council resolution affirmed that the Iranian attacks on the Gulf states and Jordan constitute a clear violation of international law and a direct threat to international peace and security.

The resolution noted that targeting civilian areas and vital infrastructure represents a dangerous escalation. It called for an immediate cessation of Iranian attacks and respect for the rules of international law that prohibit targeting civilians and civilian infrastructure.

Warning of a threat to navigation in the Strait of Hormuz

The resolution included an explicit condemnation of any actions or threats by Iran aimed at disrupting or obstructing international navigation in the Strait of Hormuz, one of the world’s most important maritime energy transit routes.

The Council affirmed that any interference with international shipping could have serious repercussions for global energy security and economic stability. It also called for ensuring freedom of navigation in international waterways in accordance with applicable laws and agreements.

International message rejecting escalation

Following the adoption of the resolution, Bahrain’s Permanent Representative to the United Nations, Jamal Al-Ruwaie, stated that its adoption sends a clear message from the Security Council that Iranian aggression is internationally unacceptable.

He added that the region’s security and stability are integral to global peace and security. He also affirmed the right of the Gulf states to defend themselves and protect their sovereignty and territories against any aggression.

In the same vein, Anwar Gargash, Diplomatic Advisor to the President of the United Arab Emirates, emphasized that the Security Council’s adoption of this resolution reflects the extent of international condemnation of Iranian attacks. He further stressed the necessity of halting these attacks to preserve regional stability and international security.
